Stay in Touch While Social Distancing

Social distancing doesn’t have to mean less meaningful contact with the people you love! There are many ways to easily share a smile with someone without physically being near them - follow a few simple tips to spark joy in the lives of your family and friends.

Video Chat

Whether you choose to FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, or use a different online software, video chatting makes
long-distance relationships a lot less difficult to keep up with. The best part is, many options are free, accessible with data or WiFi, and available at any hour of the day. A phone call is great, but seeing someone’s facial expressions establishes a much deeper connection. Setting aside time each day to reach out to a family member or friend can help you both feel instantly less isolated. You will also not miss moments like children’s first steps, impromptu musical performances, and other milestones when you’re just a click away.

Play Online Games

If you love a little friendly competition, playing online games with your friends and family can be a great option when they are far away. Whether your style is strategy, racing, puzzle, action, or board games - you have countless free titles to choose from. A few of our favorites that can be played over video chat include Codenames, Scattergories, and Colonist (a version of Settlers of Catan). The beauty of gaming on your phone or computer is that you are not limited to where you can play. Most gaming platforms also have a chat feature so you can still take part in some friendly (or maybe not-so-friendly) banter.

Send Flowers

What better way to make someone feel special and brighten their day than to send flowers! Local florists can usually deliver a bouquet, straight to your loved one’s door, the same day you order. This simple gesture can be used to empathize with, celebrate, or impress someone you care about. Whatever the occasion, it’s easy to customize the arrangement with your loved one’s favorite flower and a note.

Snail Mail A Letter

Although it has largely gone out of style with the abundance of emails and text messages, one of the best ways to show your appreciation for someone is sweet sentiment through a thoughtfully handwritten letter. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be long! Personalize your correspondence even more by adding pictures, stickers, and fun doodles. The person receiving your envelope will appreciate the time and effort you took. Also, let them know it’s on its way. The anticipation of checking their mailbox is half the excitement. Who knows, you may get a letter in return.

Put Together A Care Package

Nothing is better than receiving a surprise package with all of your favorite things. If you want to go above and beyond writing a letter, curate a box for someone with special snacks, socks, a framed picture, a piece of jewelry, candles, and/or other things they love. If postage is too expensive, it may be easier to order a list of items online and ship it directly to them. If they live nearby, you could even drop off everything on their doorstep.

Send Cash Online

Like including cash in a birthday card, sending money via Venmo or another cash app is an easy way to show someone you care. Whether it’s for a birthday, anniversary, or “just because,” everyone enjoys the occasional surprise to buy a new toy or a favorite treat. Venmo gifts instantly appear in their pocket and serve as a reminder that you are thinking of them. Who knows, your act of kindness may spark a chain reaction when they pay it forward.

While you may not be able to be near friends and family as we all social distance, taking a few simple steps to show them that you care can deepen your relationships.

Who will you call, play a game with, or send a letter or gift to this week?!
