Elmiron Drug Usage Linked to Vision Loss

Written by Bart Durham Injury Law | Mar 3, 2021 11:48:07 PM

First introduced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals in 1996, Elmiron was originally sold as a treatment to help combat bladder, abdominal, and pelvic pain. However, recent allegations have suggested the manufacturer failed to complete essential, proper research into the potential side effects and complications, including retinal maculopathy and macular degeneration (vision loss or blindness).

Despite numerous studies and journals confirming the increasing correlation between Elmiron usage and severe, irreversible damage, the drug makers did not begin warning patients of this possible side effect until June 2020.

Currently, Elmiron has not been recalled despite the overwhelming evidence of its link to deteriorated vision and does not have any generic counterparts. This makes the potential for irreversible damage much larger, as Elmiron remains on the market as the sole pharmaceutical option.

What Are the Symptoms of Retinal Maculopathy?

Signs of retinal maculopathy include:
  • Trouble Reading
  • Darkening Vision
  • Night Blindness
  • Blurry or Dark Spots in Vision

Unfortunately, eyesight may continue to deteriorate even after stopping use of the drug as studies have shown patients continuing to suffer increasing damage for years afterwards.

Who is at Risk?

Individuals that were prescribed Elmiron received the drug to help treat interstitial cystitis, which predominantly affects women, and case studies have examined users varying in age from mid 30s to mid 70s that were experiencing some degree of macular or retinal degeneration.

While many users of Elmiron have taken the drug for years, sometimes even decades, there is substantial evidence that damage to the macula can begin as early as six months into treatment. If severe enough, macular injury can ultimately result in total blindness.

Why File a Lawsuit Against Janssen Pharmaceuticals?

Drug manufacturers are expected to provide safe products to consumers. They should alert doctors and consumers about any potential dangers posed by taking this drug. When drug makers fail to do this, they can be held legally responsible for paying the enormous costs resulting from a consumer’s injury or illness.

If you’re considering filing a lawsuit to get compensation from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Elmiron, our team can help you calculate all the costs your condition has caused, which may include:

  • Medical Bills Related to Vision Loss
  • Income Loss Due to Inability to See
  • Assistance and/or Special Care
  • Anxiety, Depression, or Diminished Quality of Life Damages
