Beware of Unsolicited Calls After an Auto Accident

Written by Bart Durham Injury Law | Dec 5, 2018 3:19:03 PM

After an accident, victims may receive phone calls from attorneys offering to take their case or seeking more information about their accident. These attorneys are often referred to as “ambulance chasers.” If an attorney reaches out to you after an accident, there are many reasons why you should avoid them.

Unethical Conduct is a Red Flag

The practice of soliciting business from accident victims is actually prohibited by the American Bar Association in the United States. If an attorney has contacted you after an accident, that means they are violating Rule 7.3 of the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct. This violation can even result in disbarment. These attorneys often take advantage of the fact the general public is not aware this practice is prohibited. If they are willing to take advantage of their potential clients, they may not have their best interests at heart.

These Attorneys May Have Obtained Your Information Unethically

If an attorney is able to contact you directly after your accident, they most likely obtained information about your accident unethically. They may have gotten the information from the emergency responders on the scene, someone at the hospital, or even from the police. Improperly obtaining or purchasing accident information is another warning sign against using these attorneys and their intentions.
