How to avoid a serious bike accident in the city

Driving your bike in a city setting can be nerve-racking and enjoyable at the same time.

It's your goal to enjoy your time in the saddle, all the while doing whatever you can to avoid an accident.

Here are some of the most important safety tips to follow when biking in the city:

  • Watch for car doors. An opening door can swing into your lane of travel, thus knocking you off your bike or causing you to swerve.
  • Beware of motor vehicles. While most drivers are willing to share the road with bicyclists, this isn't the case across the board. Some will never take you into consideration when making decisions.
  • Follow the rules of the road. Just the same as cars, you need to follow the rules of the road. This means stopping at traffic signals and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Make your intentions clear. You should do whatever it takes to clearly identify the moves you are going to make. One of the best ways of doing so is to make eye contact with drivers. You should also get into the habit of using hand signals.

These are just a few of the many things you can do to avoid a serious bike accident in the city.

If you are unable to prevent trouble and find yourself part of a crash, stay where you are until help arrives. You will want to receive immediate medical attention. Being involved in a bike accident can cause serious injury, including everything from a concussion to broken bones.
