Stay Safe This Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day is synonymous with the end of summer, and the holiday weekend is drawing near. Labor Day is typically packed with events like barbecues, trips to the lake, and picnics. Whether you’re planning that last summer outing or staying home to wrap up some overdue chores, we want you and your family to be safe.

Wear a Life Jacket

In 2018, the U.S. Coast Guard reported 4,145 boating accidents that resulted in 2,511 injuries and 633 fatalities. Spending Labor Day on or in the water doesn't have to end in an accident. Be safe, pay attention, wear a life jacket and don't drink and drive.

Wearing a life jacket may seem like a no-brainer, but drownings continue to occur season-after-season due to folks NOT wearing one. 83% of boaters who drowned were reported to not be wearing a life jacket.

Just wearing any life jacket isn't the solution, though. Make sure to have one that properly fits your body and is certified by the USCG. That way, the life jacket can do its job when you need it.

Sun and Heat Protection

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. In 2019 alone, there were approximately 140,690 cancer cases diagnosed. Aside from protecting your skin, it’s important to protect your eyes too.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and avoid drinks with too much caffeine or alcohol. Avoid extreme temperature changes and wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Slow down and try to avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.

Prepare to be Outside

Being prepared is critical when in remote areas with limited access to phone service, hospitals and emergency help. Before you head out, know the ability level of the people in your group and the environment around you.

Sprains and falls are some of the most common injuries you may face, so share your travel plans and locations with a family member, neighbor or friend. Always pack a First Aid Kit – make sure to include insect repellent, sunscreen and personal medications.

Take a Red Cross First Aid/CPR course so that you will know what to do in case help is delayed. You’ll learn how to treat severe wounds, broken bones, bites and stings and more.

Handle Your Food Carefully

What’s a Labor Day holiday without LOTS to eat? To minimize the chance of cross-contamination and infection, wash your hands before and after you touch raw meat. Dry your hands on paper towels instead of cloth towels, and throw them away immediately. Y'all know by now how to wash your hands and to do it often!

Never leave food that requires refrigeration (potato salad, coleslaw or chicken salad) out in the sun. Instead, set the the food on top of a pan (or in a bowl) filled with ice and serve in a shaded area. Return the food to the fridge as soon as everyone has eaten.
