A 6-year-old boy was killed and his mother badly injured in a recent Tennessee traffic accident. The boy's 5-year-old brother was also in the car but was not seriously hurt.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the boy's mother was driving north on Old Hillsboro Road in Williamson County when a driver heading south apparently lost control of his Ford Ranger and collided with the mother's Ford Escape. Her vehicle plunged down a steep embankment and landed upside-down.

The 6-year-old later died from his injuries. The mother was reportedly hospitalized with a broken pelvis. The 5-year-old did not receive serious injuries. Several businesses in Nashville and other Tennessee locations have begun taking donations to help the family with medical expenses.

The expenses that come with a car accident can be enormous. Medical expenses are often enormous, even for those who have insurance, and serious injuries often lead to long periods of rehabilitation during which a victim cannot work. In some cases, car accidents lead to permanent disability.

Tennessee residents injured in a car accident due to another driver's negligence may be compensated through a personal injury lawsuit. In the case of a fatal accident, the family of the victim may be compensated through a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the victim's estate.

Drivers act negligently when they fail to exercise the same level of care that a reasonable person would under similar circumstances and someone is injured as a result. Common evidence of negligence includes such behavior as driving while drunk, texting while driving or otherwise failing to follow traffic safety laws. Tennessee residents who have been injured or lost a loved one due to another driver's negligence should seek out help understanding their legal options.
